Process validation
Posted at: 2009-09-17
Great question!

Indeed there is a way to measure and validate the output of your Super Seal 75. You’ll ultimately want to measure the output current of the sealer and compare it against your validation data. If you purchased our validation package you’ll have these output current values at varies power levels. If not you can simply compare it aginst the data you have for your process window.

The process of validating does require a couple pieces of specialized equipment. If you need specific recommendations drop me a note and I’ll get the exact systems we use to you for validation.

3 tourque questions.

Great question!

A rule of thumb that we use is the removal torque will be approximately 50% of the application torque. However, I always recommend two things: 1) run tests on your package and determine the results you are getting and 2) check with you cap manufacturer to verify.

If you follow the 50% rule of thumb that would mean you need 26 in lbs of application torque to meet your 13 in lbs of removal torque. So it sounds like we might be running into a bit of a challenge with the required removal torque and maximum recommended torque.

One option that might help is retorquing, but I’d say it would be a good idea to chat more about your application. Give me a ring at 262.250.3164

Does a dispensing closure with an induction liner typically require a higher torque? Are there recommended seal diameters for a given closure inner diameter?

A dispensing closure does not typically require any additional torque than a similar size non-dispensing closure, but it will normally require a different sealing head than a CT or CRC of the same size. Inner diameter is best supplied by container & closure manufacturer. We see them range from the same diameter as the closure to a couple mm smaller.

Under what circumstances is a secondary application torque necessary?

Retorque depends on the removal torque requirements of the packager. Most packagers will retorque child resistant closures to ensure the child resistant feature is not compromised. It is important to place the retorquer as far down line from the sealer as possible to give the innerseal adequate time to set.
