Sealing Issues

Can you comment on ”foam faults” – when the foam liner on a 2 piece liner does not stay inside the closure, but remains adhered on the foil (on bottle).

We would need to see samples to determine the cause. Potential causes are incomplete wax melt due to lack of heat, hot melt failure (glue used to keep the liner in the cap), back bonding due to excessive heat or a combination of things. If you would like to send samples please contact me (BJ Radek) to discuss 630-922-3158.

Very interested in an induction liner that vents slowly allowing off-gassing over time. Recommendations?

For dry products FoilSeal 5-4 or FoilSeal 5-10. You may also discuss mechanical venting with you closure supplier or contact Performance Systematix at 616-949-9090

There have been a lot of trouble shooting tips focusing on the sealer, and the bottle & closure – are there any tips for evaluating the quality of the liners?

There certainly are. Please contact me (BJ Radek) at 630-922-3158 to discuss.

Can I specify a water vapor transmission rate for the foil?

This is a difficult question. If you would like to discuss this in detail please contact me (BJ Radek) at 630-922-3158 for additional discussion.

Can you speak a little more on the expiry dating of closures please?

Please visit our website at http://www.seligsealing.com Under the QUALITY section, see Recommended Storage and Handling. This will give you a detailed response. The closure supplier should be able to provide a position as well.

What is the general thickness of the foils?

The most common are .001”, .005”, .00035” but others may be used. The .001” foil provides the widest processing window and is the easiest to run.

A barrier layer provides better barrier than the foil?

Good question. We use the term “barrier” in two ways. First, the foil provides barrier in terms of Moisture Vapor Transmission and Oxygen transmission. The foil provides a completely hermetic seal (when non venting materials are used). In some case, a “barrier” layer may be needed to protect the foil against the product.

What is the rule of thumb for sizing diameter of the liner in relationship to diameter of the bottle finish?

It’s on a case by case basis and is typically dictated by the closure design and molding process. We can always evaluate samples to provide an opinion but the closure supplier should be the best resource.

How much should the foil hang over container lip?
